How can my advice be bad.

I also never said use a Beaulieu. Thats the camera I went with, because of what other pros had told me.
I don't know much but I do know if you give a guy a cheap camera and then give him a good quality camera then he will turn out better pics with the high quality one if he has ever used a camra before.

I will say that your video is the clearest I've seen yet.

Thanks

I only copied the link cause its the nicest looking transfer I've ever seen online. A relatively cheap Canon 814E shot that. I only project my footage so I don't have any clips of my own to post.

perhaps you should examine some Ranked footage taken by a professional cinematographer with exr 45 d available from pro8 for yourself. it has a finer grain structure is sharper than kodachrome 40 and much more realistic color.

now an apology is in order

Thats some good work from an 814. The thing is a great cameraman can make clear shots with almost any camera. A Good Camerman can make better shots with a great camera than he can with a cheap camer.
Who knows. This is not about cameras anyway.
just having fun
I've seen super 8 footage that looks good enough for me to shoot on super 8. Thats all that matters is that it looks good for you shot.

this forum is fabulous.
Thanks everybody for your passionate replies. I love
your internal fights. They are cute.
What i understand is that the most important part is the transfert.
Do you think that pro8mm rank transfers are the best in europe? They are so expensive! Are they using late technology machines?
A friend told me that there were much better machine than the rank (especially the old ones) but usually these machines are dedicated to 16 or 35 mm. They are like scanners scanning frame by frame. The rank is supposed to be a bit "soft" as far as sharpness.
What about the workprinters of moviestuff. Can these transfers hold comparaisons (always as far as sharpness) with rank transfers : i would use 3ccd DVX100 camera with it.)
If not, do you know a place in europe really good for
transfers. Or is it still pro8mm that does the best job?
On the site of JL i saw some links towards high end transfers supposed to be much better than the rank,
but a lot of these links are inoperant(probably a bit old).
If this transfer problem (and price) was solved i think
that 8mm would just explode (even with the new consumer hd jvc camera sold in the states right now).
A last question that would resume everything:
is there a transfert place that could show us that 8mm
could be comparable with hd video.(what ever the price is!). Am-i asking too much???
I love film. But i like sharpness too. I'd love to stop using video cameras. Or do you think that i should go towards 16mm? The problem is that i usually shoot experimental films without scripts, and 16mm is too expensive to shoot without script. I think that 16 mm is another process, more close to narative cinema, and
naration is not my thing.
I recently shot footage with beaulieu 8mm. When i look at the footage (k40)with a proper tool;l it looks so sharp.
Even though 8mm is small isn't there a machine that could reveal this sharpness??
Thanks again.

another message:
is this image 8mm footage?...if this one is 8mm...resolution can be perfect:

http://www.8mm.filmshooting.com/scri...um/TEX1?full=1

if the person who did this image is on this forum , could you tell me how it was transferred???
Thanks

ps: i hope i am not boring with all these sharpness questions. Maybe that for all of you it's not a major question. I know that the charm of film super8 is somewhere else. But still i need to know what can be done with super8.

No problem. It is once again one of my 35mm still images posted. This time to show the qualities of a long lost film stock: 100 ASA IFI colour. I posted the image to ask someone if they recognized the real name of the filmstock. I think it would be great for S8 neg film. No one seemed to recognize it. Photo shot about 1980.

It is transferred via a Canon 9900 flatbed scanner.

As Cameraguy pointed out there is a huge difference in image sharpness between still oriented images and moving image sharpness. Some of the reason for this is the relatively slow shutter speeds used 1/40t to 1/60th of a second - typical. This make each frame somewhat unsharp but when run at 24 fps it becomes very sharp in impression. "high sampling"

This is some of the "secrets" of moving images/motion pictures.

In my goat sample image posted above I tried to pick the sharpest image avail. Howvever - with a hand held cam it is alomst impossible to get 1 sharp frame. There were great variations. This one was the best but with a tripod it would have been a lot better. However aonother goat kicked my butt all the time while filming too - not to easy this.

Do not get so much stuck in the sharpness issue. Some cams/lenses with no lens coating will offer a hard contrast/narrow color resolution/high contrast ratio with the K40 and produce "sharp" (Hard contrast)images (Actually with lower resolution than) other lenses being coated which may offer a wider contrast range and produce softer and more colourful images with higher resolution!

The best way to find out about this is to just start shooting, experimenting and projecting. Only then you will see it all and learn what you like to learn.

These are samples I have posted from various shoots/tests to evaluate filmstocks.
Read the comments under each pic to find out about details:

thanks mr booster...
as you say, i'll try.
I did 3 films already.
They are incredebly sharp (beaulieu 4008+ tripod).
Unfortunately with my projector (an old medium elmo)
the film keeps unfocusing itself (like as if every second or so it would move from
the projection window back and forth...very annoying.)
I will have to buy another one.
I checked frame by frame and i know this is not coming from the cam...so i can't even appreciate the quality of my lenses.
Thanks for the links too...but it's sure that a lot of them are very very blurry. The best one is definetely "the white goat" one..

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Most of the PRO8MM images are from 200, 250 and 500 ASA neg film and neg film will offer lower contrast and more grain. However at 24fps it is much better but nothing like K40.

Alos as pointed out earlier PRO8mm may not have the most modern S8 transfer system around these days.

I posted the linx because these images are not under the S8mm image gallery due to some reorg of the site some while ago.
